Custom builds with S&S, RevTech, Ultima or JIMS blocks are the ideal scenario for Pistonix: no OEM ECM to argue with, no HDLAN, full freedom over wiring and calibration. Pick the ECU based on the I/O and features you need: Pistonix Forge for simple street builds, Pistonix Apex for complex turbo/nitrous projects, Pistonix Quarter for dedicated drag.
Recommended ECU Pistonix Apex Top of the line. More I/O, ride-by-wire, full Milwaukee-Eight support.

Electronics
What is inside.
- Crankshaft
- Depends on the crank/case — S&S and RevTech typically accept an aftermarket VR sensor with a 32-2 wheel (Harley-style) or 36-2 (more common in custom projects).
- Trigger wheel
- Configurable: 32-2, 36-2, 60-2 (automotive). The Pistonix decoder adapts.
- Knock sensor
- Aftermarket Bosch piezo — recommended on any build with boost or aggressive cams.
- Coils
- IGN1A smart coils or an external igniter. 2 or 4 outputs depending on displacement and staged config.
- Ride-by-wire
- Optional — custom projects rarely use DBW. Pistonix Forge and Apex work with traditional cable throttles.
- HDLAN
- Not applicable.
Practical notes
What you need to know.
- Without an OEM ECM you define the harness. Upside: clean. Downside: you have to document and build it from scratch.
- Lack of a ready-made basemap is offset by assisted tuning via Pistonix Garage (tune snapshot) and direct support.
- Pairing with a custom chassis (Big Dog, rigid swingarm) is where Pistonix shines most — total flexibility.
