1984-1999

Harley-Davidson Evolution Big Twin (Evo)

The Evolution engine (1984-1999) powered an entire Harley generation — Dyna, Softail and Touring before the Twin Cam. Most run a stock carburetor with a simple mechanical ignition module. Pistonix Forge enters as a retrofit: it replaces the standalone igniter (programmable 3D RPM × MAP curve) and, optionally, converts to EFI with an aftermarket throttle body. Roadmap entry, no committed window.

Electronics

What is inside.

Crankshaft
Generator (rotor) sensor or an externally mounted retrofit VR. Trigger pattern depends on the retrofit.
Trigger wheel
Stock: VOES module + mechanical pickup. Retrofit: 32-2 or 36-1 wheel.
Knock sensor
Aftermarket Bosch piezo recommended on builds with worked heads.
Coils
Stock dual-tower coils (wasted spark) or IGN1A smart coils when retrofitting.
Ride-by-wire
Not applicable — mechanical throttle.
HDLAN
Not applicable.
Practical notes

What you need to know.

  • Hardware retrofit is required (crank sensor, coils, throttle body if you go EFI).
  • Good fit for owners who want to keep the carbureted soul and add a programmable ignition curve.
  • Full EFI conversion calls for fuel system planning (in-tank pump, regulator, return line).
  • No launch window yet — comes after Forge stabilizes on Twin Cam.
