Harley-Davidson Shovelhead

The Shovelhead is an entire chapter of Harley culture — 18 years of engine that carried the brand through the 70s and early 80s. Carbureted, points ignition early, then electronic module. Pistonix Shovelhead enters as a retrofit programmable ignition (3D RPM × vacuum curve), with a future upgrade path to full EFI via aftermarket throttle body. Roadmap, no window yet.

Electronics

What is inside.

Crankshaft
Stock: mechanical pickup on the crank. Retrofit: external VR sensor with a 32-2 or 36-1 wheel.
Trigger wheel
A retrofit VR sensor is the only path to stable programmable ignition.
Knock sensor
Optional aftermarket Bosch piezo on performance builds.
Coils
Stock dual-tower coils or IGN1A smart coils in the retrofit.
Ride-by-wire
Not applicable.
HDLAN
Not applicable.
Practical notes

What you need to know.

  • Crank sensor retrofit is required — you cannot keep the points pickup.
  • Keeping the carburetor is viable — Pistonix Forge in ignition-only mode.
  • Full EFI takes investment in an aftermarket throttle body, fuel pump and injectors.
  • On the roadmap as a classic V-twin expansion wave — no committed timeline.
